New Testament Journey Day 31: Matthew 8:5-13. A Roman Officer Demonstrates Faith. This is probably one of my favorite scriptures in the bible! Oh the hope that lies in these verses. Get your bible out, your bible app, and make sure to read them slowly, and let it sink in.
This Roman soldier, whose place in the Roman Army put him in opposition of Jesus, had so much Faith that Jesus would heal his child by just speaking it from where he was. And then in verse 10 it says “When Jesus heard this, he was amazed”. … can you imagine having so much Faith that you amaze Jesus?!? Oh that’s the kind of faith I want. Faith that will move mountains. Faith like a child – and a Roman soldier.
The Roman officer could have let many obstacles stand between him and Jesus – pride, doubt, money, language, distance, time, self-sufficiency, power, race. Be he didn’t. If he did not let these barriers block his approach to Jesus, we don’t need to either. What keeps you from Christ? The bible says over and over again “Humble yourself and pray” – that’s where healing is.
